Why I couldn’t finish An Ember in the Ashes

I blame part of it on me, and part of it on the book.

To be honest with you, It’s been a long time since I’ve constantly read book after book so I’m a bit rusty. I started this blog to get back into reading and it’s been hard to get back into the swing of things. Hense all the book tags.

Now, this book didn’t make it easy. I can understand the switching of views between the two characters. I can understand the importance of backstory. What I cant understand is why it took so LONG!

I tried reading this book for a week and I brought it with me everywhere. Literally everywhere. To work, to my boyfriends house, to the store, everywhere. I tried reading it on my breaks and lunches. I tried reading it while my boyfriend played video games. I tried reading it at home, on my bed, with only my cats purrs to distract me. But I just couldn’t get into it.

My takeaways were the character Helene who I related to a bit and the idea of the world. Helene is a badass character {See my Top 5 Tuesday – Badass Female Characters post} and the world that it is set in is interesting. I like the idea of the rebellion and the school for the Masks. Knowing my parents, I could have ended up a Mask too. But these two things alone were not enough to keep me enthralled in the book, let alone read the others.

Tell me your thoughts on this! Is it just my reading funk and the book deserves another shot another time? Or is the book maybe just not for me?

Best Wishes, Xee

  1. This book is a LONG read! Im a daily back to back book reader and this one took my so long I wrote it into my review as a warning. I feel that the book MAKES you read every word so you aren’t able to just skim over parts
